Commonly proposed as a functional beverage, Kombucha is green tea or a sweetened black drink, which is mildly alcoholic, with a light effervescence, prepared by the process of fermentation. A symbiotically formulated culture of bacteria and yeasts, commonly referred to as SCOBY is used to ferment black and green tea and finally obtain Kombucha. The composition of the SCOBY culture may vary, where the yeast constituent comprises of Saccharomyces cerevisiae, and also few other species, whereas, the bacterial constituent includes Gluconacetobacter xylinus. This bacterial species helps in oxidizing the alcohol which is produced by the yeast, and converts it into acetic acid. 

The Kombucha beverage is mainly available in two types of flavors, i.e. original or flavored. Whereas, this product is made available to the public through various distribution channels like supermarkets, online stores and healthcare stores.

Kombucha beverage is known to possess numerous health benefits, thereby justifying the wide scale adoption of this product.
